Wood Stains: Water Based

Furniture Design Ideas featuring Water Based Wood Stains.

"I made this stain sample board. It has 8 different options for a client, and it's designed to give them a good idea of how the stain will look on their project. This piece of wood is cut from the same board that went towards the drawer fronts, so it should be a good representation of how the stain will take when applied to the final piece."

"This beautiful mid century dresser lasted less than an hour in my inventory before a client dropping off a custom piece snagged it up for her son's room! The top and bottom two drawers were stained in General Finishes Espresso Water Based Stain while the rest was painted in one of my favorite grays, GF Queenstown Gray. New brushed gold hardware completed this update!" - Nap Time Furniture Creations

"Old dresser turned Farmhouse Coffee Bar!! I love this so much! First, I sanded the top down to bare wood and used my favorite General Finishes Whitewash Water Based Stain. Then I removed the bottom 3 drawers and created one storage shelf and one large open space to store all the things. I left the top two drawers for silverware, utensils or your favorite stash of coffee and tea. Then to hide all your junk, I added a cafe rod with fabric. Keep it open or closed... it’s up to you! I also...

I always use natural oil finishes but when a client request some stain, I use General Finishes each and every time. Water based so clean up is a breeze, especially when running it through my spray gun. I love this stuff and you should try it out!

These pieces are part of a bedroom set we did for a custom work client. We painted the bottom “Perfect Gray” by General Finishes and stained the top in a mix of General Finishes “Provincial” and “Graystone” Water Based Stains." - Moses Restorations
"Ok I am OVER THE MOON with this makeover!! The back was completely warped and broken and every joint was loose. I took the time to re-glue and clamp every single joint on this desk and cut a new, maple back for it. After taking care of the structural issues, I sanded it down and painted it in General Finishes Lamp Black and after removing the veneer, stained the front piece in GF Whitewash water based wood stain. I top coated the entire piece and added dainty new knobs even adding one on the...

Big props to my hubby Jim for constructing this baby. The top was stained in GF Graystone Water Based Stain and then top coated in High Performance Topcoat." - Upcycling by...

"This solid maple boho beauty made by Willet Furniture in the 50's was a diamond in the rough and I had so much fun shining her up.  She was stripped down to raw wood, bleached to lighten up the spots where the hardware and keyhole covers were, and white washed using General Finishes Water- Based Whitewash Stain. Re·Design with Prima furniture transfer in Folk II was applied, each area laid out a little different and unique than the next. And those solid antique brass drawer pulls really...
"This 70 year old, Mid Century Modern sideboard has been modernized. Our customer was so kind in insisting I refinish this family heirloom for her, so I wanted to make each detail perfect. I stripped it bare with both a furniture stripper and several steps in hand sanding. Once the piece was brought to bare wood, I stained it with General Finishes Antique Brown Water Based Stain and gave the wood four coats of General Finishes Satin Polyacrylic varnish. The drawers and cabinet doors are primed...

"This “docking station” was custom made to hold specific items that usually end up in their drop zone. Phone, wallet, keys, watch, work lanyard, wedding ring, loose change and pens from his pocket. This wood was stained in General Finishes Tobacco Water Based Stain and was accented in Cherry wood around the edges to make it pop. I think that’s my favorite detail that Bill snuck in there, and I also love the subtle name. Nice and organized!" - Sweet VanJoy
"Meet Roger D...yes, a nod to The Who. He's classic with a twist! The blue and gray in Joe's new rug gave us the color inspiration for this groovy blend and everything came together beautifully. I started at the base with Dixie Belle Paint Company Midnight Sky, faded to Antebellum Blue and capped it with Hurricane Gray. The drawers and top have been re-stained with General Finishes Onyx Water Based Stain and still sport that gorgeous woodgrain. New hairpin legs and wavy raised-stencil accent...
"This transformation is hard to believe when you see the before. She was covered in brown gel stain and her legs were all broken. Fast forward and now she’s pretty much a new dresser. I added new flat black metal legs. Sanded all the drawers and white washed them (General Finishes Whitewash Water Based Stain) to accentuate that grain that you never knew was there. The body was sanded and filled to make everything nice and smooth. I sprayed it with my Beachy Chic White chalky paint and...

48” custom built oak table stained in Graystone

"Let's start at the top, because why not? A beautifully refinished wood top is a hope I have for each charm when we begin. It's a gem in a crown, a feather in a cap...a piece of history shining through. For Daphne, the path to restoration was clear: Sand away the crystalizing varnish to reveal that stunning grain. For the next step...choose that complementing color stain. I went with General Finishes Water Based Onyx to deepen the tone and leave black within the cavities of the trim. Finally I...
"This unique ornate Buffet has been refinished in General Finishes Reverent Gray and lightly distressed. The top and the legs have been refinished in General Finishes Provincial Water-Based Stain and topcoated for added protection. The stunning original hardware has been waxed in an antique bronze and white gold. This is an absolutely incredible centerpiece for any dining room, living room or entryway." - Estrella Design
"This piece is GREEN with envy! This cabinet was my Granny and Gramps from my dad's side of the family aka my OWN family heirloom. It was in ROUGH shape from years of use. Missing veneer pieces, piece of the ornate feet had fallen off over the years and the top had multiple water rings. Lastly, the cabinet door was cracked and would no longer hold the screws in the hinges. It may have been in a sad state but it was DEFINITELY worth saving. I gave it a VERY good sanding and cleaning. Then I...

"Another client owned pedestal table revived and to think, I almost passed on doing this table! I was concerned about it getting too cold in the garage, but thankfully we experienced above normal temperatures and lots of sun in November which helped greatly as well as my husband's graciousness to let this table sit inside our home for several days while I sealed it. I did use a water-based stain by General Finishes in the color Walnut rather than my typical oil-based stain, which dried so much...

"Melina came to us in the spring, but took quite some time to tell us her vision for this transformation. She appeared often as we repaired her dovetails and sanded her wood fronts, but it wasn't until fall when she chose vintage glam refinery. Her tiger oak top and fronts had to remain a part of her, so I stained them in General Finishes Provincial stain and sealed them with semi-gloss top coat for durability and shine. What better color to accentuate that woodgrain than Dixie Belle Paint...

"This buffet is OLD...but is no longer showing it’s age. I love that it doesn’t look like an old dated, dingy piece of furniture but it doesn’t look brand new either, if that makes sense?   This piece was in rough shape when it came to me, broken drawers, missing pieces, missing hardware, peeling veneer. I fixed all the damaged areas then stripped and stained using General Finishes Graystone Water Based Stain. It has a whole new look on life now!"
